Why We Formulate with Grass-Fed Tallow

Why We Formulate with Grass-Fed Tallow

Why tallow belongs in our formulas

We formulate with tallow because it creates the rich, concentrated texture we want in a waterless balm. As an emollient, it helps skin feel softer and smoother. Alongside mango butter, jojoba oil and beeswax, it also helps form a protective layer that slows moisture loss.

That practical performance matters to us. Tallow gives our balms body, spreadability and a slow melting feel without requiring a long list of fillers. A small amount warms between the fingers and spreads over the areas that need it.

Why grass-fed and finished matters to Pure Heritage

Our tallow comes from grass-fed and finished cattle sourced through trusted farms in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. We choose close to home sourcing because traceability and relationships matter to the way we make products. Every Pure Heritage formula is made, filled, inspected and packaged by hand in our New Jersey studio.

“Grass-fed and finished” does not make a cosmetic universally suitable, and it is not a promise that no one will react. It describes our sourcing standard and the ingredient we intentionally choose as the foundation of many formulas.

How tallow works in a balm

  • It acts as an emollient, helping rough or dry feeling skin feel softer.

  • Its solid structure gives a balm richness and helps it stay concentrated without added water.

  • It works with plant oils and butters to improve glide and spreadability.

  • With waxes and other lipids, it helps create a moisture sealing layer on the skin.

  • Because the formula is concentrated, a small amount can cover a larger area.

What the research says, and what it does not

Research focused specifically on cosmetic tallow used on human skin is still limited. A 2024 scoping review identified significant gaps and concluded that more controlled research is needed, particularly on topical cosmetic use in humans and possible side effects.

We do not present tallow as a cure or a replacement for medical care. We use it as a functional cosmetic ingredient in thoughtfully balanced formulas designed to moisturize and support comfortable feeling skin. Individual responses still vary, and a patch test is a sensible first step.

Why the rest of the formula matters

An ingredient never works in isolation. Pure Balm combines grass-fed and finished tallow with mango butter, beeswax and jojoba oil, without essential oils or added fragrance. Repair Balm adds raw honey and essential oils of frankincense and cedarwood. Everyone Balm includes essential oils of lavender, vanilla and chamomile.

Those differences matter. Someone who wants the shortest, fragrance-free option may begin with Pure Balm, while another person may prefer the sensory experience of a scented formula. The best choice is the one whose full ingredient list and finish fit your needs.

Our standard is transparency

We want you to know what is in the jar, where the central ingredient comes from and why each component is there. Tradition may inspire a formula, but clear sourcing, careful making and honest expectations are what make it useful in a modern routine.
