Serum, Facial Oil or Balm: Understanding the Difference

Serum, Facial Oil or Balm: Understanding the Difference

Start with the formula, not the label

Skin care names are not perfectly standardized. One brand’s serum may be a light, water based formula; another may call a blend of botanical oils a serum. Read the ingredient list and directions, then pay attention to how the product feels on your skin.

At Pure Heritage, Revival Serum is an oil based facial serum. It is lighter than our concentrated balms and is designed as a leave on step after cleansing. Our balms have a richer, more protective finish and can be used where extra moisture is wanted.

What is a serum?

Serum is a broad category for a concentrated leave on product. Some serums are water based; others are oil based. They are usually applied in a small amount after cleansing and before a heavier cream or balm. Choose one for the function and ingredients, not simply because the word serum sounds more advanced.

What is a facial oil?

A facial oil is a blend of one or more oils intended to soften skin and reduce the feeling of dryness. Oils do not add water to the skin, but they can help smooth the surface and support moisture retention. A few drops are usually enough.

What is a balm?

A balm is a waterless, semi solid product made with oils, butters and often waxes. It melts with body warmth and creates a richer layer than most facial oils. That makes it useful for dry areas, cold weather or the last step of an evening routine. Because balms are concentrated, begin with less than you think you need.

How to choose

  • Choose a serum when you want a light, targeted leave on step and the ingredients suit your skin.

  • Choose a facial oil when you prefer a fluid texture that spreads easily and softens without a waxy finish.

  • Choose a balm when you want a richer layer to seal in moisture or focus on dry areas.

  • Use one leave on product if that is enough. Layering all three is optional, not a requirement.

How to layer without heaviness

As a general rule, apply water based products first, then lighter oils, then richer balms. Give each step a moment to settle and use thin layers. In a simple Pure Heritage routine, cleanse, apply one to three pumps of Revival Serum, and finish with a very small amount of balm only where additional moisture is needed.

If your skin feels greasy, sticky or uncomfortable, reduce the amount or remove a layer. A good routine should fit your skin and your day, not a fixed number of steps.
